How industries are putting engineers on the front line of AI

73 third-party cases compiled from public reports: who did it, how it was delivered, what results were published — with links to the originals.

Every case on this page is a public third-party case. None are BOOK.AI clients and BOOK.AI was not involved.

First, the basics

What FDE is, and why it matters

What is FDE?

Forward Deployed Engineering puts engineers inside the customer’s team to find the real problem, build and ship the AI, then feed what they learn back into the product. The Pragmatic Engineer describes the role as “A software engineer who alternates between being embedded with customer teams and core product engineering teams”, and traces it to Palantir.

Source: The Pragmatic Engineer: What are Forward Deployed Engineers, and why are they so in demand? ↗

Why AI companies are all doing it

Per the Financial Times as cited by Times of India, Indeed data showed monthly FDE job postings grew “more than 800%” in Jan–Sep 2025; Palantir describes the approach as “product discovery from the inside”. Business Insider quotes OpenAI on “hiring our own engineers to help deploy for our largest projects”.

What makes it work: evals and staying on

In an interview, OpenAI’s FDE lead said the Morgan Stanley project “took six months of pilots, evals, and iteration”, and stressed “Use eval-driven development”.
